    • Adventures in Casual Artistry

Posted at 4:00 pm by Michelle Joelle, on May 31, 2016

Even though I haven’t had the time to devote myself to any diligent study of drawing or painting, I always find time to dabble a little just for fun. Here is just a sampling of my favorite results.

I finally decided to start filling in my favorite coloring book, Rackham’s Fairy Tale Coloring Book. I’ve been intimidated by this gorgeously illustrated book for a long time, but I am pleased with how my initial colorings have come out.

This is how the inside flap is filled in by Arthur Rackham himself:

I tried to copy his work as closely as possible with my color pencils:

Side by side just because I am so proud:

Before that, I decided to play with water colors. I tried some different techniques, to varying degrees of success. These next few samples represent the range of my experiments.

This summer I plan to work through a few independent drawing courses and work on my water color skills with a friend. I plan to scout out every tutorial on the web, and end my summer wholly improved in my favorite hobby.

As the temperatures start to rise, I’ve been dreaming of oceans and beaches. In lieu of an actual trip to the shore, I’ve been painting some scenes from my past travels. Presented here alongside their inspiration photos, a couple of my favorites.

This first one was a loose interpretation. I went from memory, and I think I had a couple photos in mind when I was painting, but I was mainly thinking of this:

There was clearly another image in my head at the same time, but I still love the end result.  Next up:

Inspired by this photo, with some small adjustments in the color scheme and detail:

    • On a Painting Spree

Lately, I’ve been on a bit of a painting and sketching spree. Not everything is worth sharing, but here are the highlights:

For this next painting, the inspiration can be found here. Unfortunately, the Pinterest link goes to what seems to be spam, or else rounds me back to Pinterest, so if anyone knows the origin of this photo, please let me know.
