For 30 days, I’ll be practicing my painting skills. I’d love to take my hobby into a craft, and turning it into a daily habit is my first step. Don’t worry – after this month I’ll go back to essays and random thoughts on philosophy and writing.
Day 8: Illustrating a Scene from “Birdseed”
A while back I posted a short story called “Birdseed“, and I wanted to give my character a face, just for fun. I picked up some water colors, and gave them a try. I struggled a bit, but I felt like I ended up capturing her character.
After a week’s worth of consistent practice, I wanted to try to put her into an illustration. First, I sketched it out, adding her glasses:
Then I added the larger color blocks:
Filled in some details…
And then added all of the finishing touches:
This is definitely one I want to come back and redo a little more seriously – I especially love how the seed bags came out, so I’d like to try and take that level of detail across the entire piece. But that would take more than one day, so it’ll have to be after this month is over.
Until next time.

Birdseed is such a cute story. It’s nice to see it with some illustration!

I always read it with water color illustrations in my head!
