I wrote this song when I was 18 years old, and had just learned my first three chords on the guitar. D, G, A – over and over. I had a very, very brief stint as a singer-songwriter until I realized I hated singing solos in front of a crowd. I also like my song lyrics and poetry to rhyme, so admittedly I’m kind of a philistine when it comes to this sort of thing. My metaphors are a bit hokey, but I’m still pretty fond of this little song.
This Song
This song is for all of those who had to climb
ladders so high up that they had to leave themselves behind.
For those who cry at night, though not always sure why,
who’ve gone so far away trying to leave themselves behind.
I know that you hear me,
so when you’re all alone tonight
breathe deeply, and slowly.
Look deep within your pain and cry for yourself this time.
This song is for all those who were never treated kind,
for all those Cinderellas who had to leave themselves behind.
For those who’ll never have the chance to press rewind,
and relive their lives without having to leave themselves behind.
It’s your turn to feel now,
so if you’ve locked it tight away
find the key and let it out.
Don’t be shy or afraid, because today is your day.
This song is for all of those who had to fight
the greater fight against themselves to leave themselves behind.
Climb right back down that ladder, this time enjoy the ride
and relive your lives without having to leave yourself behind.

I do believe I remember this song. 🙂 Too bad Stephed Shells never took off! But I suspect we are both doing just fine.
